Hit the Trails in Lil Red!

Lil Red? That's my 2020 Jeep Wrangler! She finally took her virgin ride on the trails in Nelson's Landing.

On the spur of the moment, Harry and I ventured out last Wednesday to hit the trail in Nelson's Landing. We stopped to visit the ghost town en route, also known as El Dorado Canyon or Nelson Ghost Town. Located on NV 165-E,  it's just  an hour outside of Las Vegas. The town is very scenic and sometimes used as a Hollywood set. It's also an area that's highly recommended for photographers, amateurs and professionals alike.

Still standing is the ghost town's historic gold mine (shown below). It's said to be the oldest, richest, most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada. Many old buildings, retro signs, a telephone booth, abandon vehicles and a crashed airplane are just a few of the things that make the scene fervent. The old store is actually open and offers refreshing ice cream bars among other items. During our excursion, there was a food truck parked just across the street.

The Trail
Eagle Wash Road is the trail head that takes you down to the Colorado River. Even though 4x4 is recommended, it's possible to take this path with a sedan. Surprisingly, there were a couple parked not too far from the water's edge.

The trail itself is rather easy, making it a nice ride for beginners. There are no large rocks to climb over and certainly no need for rock rails or a brush guard. While on the trail, we encountered one other vehicle, and thankfully, we were on a wider part of the path. The trail does get narrow in certain places, making passing another vehicle difficult.

Down at the river, we found several people enjoying the hot day on a small beach-like area. There's enough room for a pop up canopy or two. I highly recommended it if you plan on spending the afternoon lolling around the waterfront. On this particular day, the temps topped out at 114, so bring plenty of cold water and sunscreen lotion.

Around to the right-hand side of the lake is a great place for cliff jumping. We had the pleasure of watching several divers during our visit. The jumps are said to be 25' at the lowest point while other spots are supposedly 60' above the water.

Harry and I enjoyed the scenic views of the surrounding mountains, the desert, and the river front. All in all, we had a great day in my Jeep!

Note to Vegas visitors: Check with local tour companies before you come to town. There are several that will take you to the places I mentioned.
